They say this girl was beaten by security forces in Lattakia.

After a little bit of research, we found out this was false.

This little girl's name is Katie Ann Guttridge who was beaten at a nursery in England in December.

Credibility keeps going down the drain.

Ranskan presidentti Francois Hollande sanoo, että Syyrian kriisiin ei saada ratkaisua, jos maan johtaja Bashar al-Assad ei lähde.

Hollande kertoi näkemyksestään tavattuaan Venäjän presidentin Vladimir Putinin.

Hollanden mukaan Syyrian hallintoa vastaan pitää kohdistaa pakotteita.

Putin puolestaan sanoi, että pakotteet toimivat harvoin tehokkaasti. Hänen mukaansa pakotteisiin liittyviä asioita pitää käsitellä pääosin YK:n turvaneuvostossa.

Diminishing the principle of state sovereignty is fraught with the destruction of the world order and a full-scale war, even with the use of nuclear weapons, warns Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
­“We have seen many examples of infringements on sovereignty in the recent years. Just remember military operations against foreign countries in violation of UN resolutions, statements that this or that regime has lost legitimacy – by the way, from the point of view of a foreign state rather than the people in question – as well as introduction of sanctions bypassing international organizations,” Medvedev stated at the International Legal Forum in St. Petersburg.
He specifically stressed that United Nations, although not perfect, is the only tool in the settlement of conflicts for the international community.
“We have no other platform, even though some may not like it. It is the UN Charter that calls for respecting the supremacy of law and sovereignty of states,” Medvedev pointed out.
He went on to say that hasty military operations usually end up with radicals coming to power.
The premier added that those issues, including the situation around Syria and nuclear security, will be discussed at the G8 summit in Camp David on May 18-19.

YK:n pääsihteeri Ban Ki Moon uskoo, että terroristijärjestö al-Qaida on vastuussa Syyrian viimeviikkoisista pommi-iskuista.
Ainakin 55 ihmistä kuoli ja lähes 400 haavoittui kahden autopommin räjähdyksessä Syyrian pääkaupungissa Damaskoksessa.
Räjähdykset tapahtuivat turvallisuusjoukoille kuuluvan rakennuksen edustalla viime viikon torstaina.
Syyrian hallitus syytti iskuista tuoreeltaan terroristeja, millä viranomaiset yleensä viittaavat opposition taistelijoihin. Oppositio puolestaan vihjasi hallituksen järjestäneen räjähdykset pelotellakseen YK-tarkkailijoita.

F-Secure sai haltuunsa kiintolevyn, joka todistaa Syyrian hallituksen harjoittamasta vakoilusta kapinallisia vastaan.
Syyrian hallinto käyttää haittaohjelmia kapinallisia vastaan, tietoturvayhtiö F-Secure kertoo. Firma sai kontaktin kautta haltuunsa siirrettävän kiintolevyn. Se sisälsi levykuvan viranomaisten kohteeksi joutuneen syyrialaisen aktivistin järjestelmästä.
Aktivistin tietokone oli saastutettu Skype-keskustelun kautta, F-Securen Mikko Hyppönen kertoo blogissa. Aloite keskusteluun tuli näennäisesti toiselta aktivistilta, joka oli kuitenkin pidätetty jo aikaisemmin, eikä siten voinut olla asialla.
Keskustelun aloitus sijoitti aktivistin tietokoneelle takaoven nimeltä Xtreme RAT. Se on täysiverinen etähallintatyökalu, jota myydään verkossa sadan euron hintaan.
– Meillä on syitä epäillä, että tämä tartunta ei ollut vain huonoa onnea. Uskomme, että aktivistin tietokone oli nimenomaisesti otettu kohteeksi, Hyppönen toteaa.
Takaovi ottaa yhteyttä ip-osoitteeseen, joka kuuluu Syyrian hallituksen alaiselle teleyhtiölle.
Hyppönen huomauttaa, ettei tämä ole ensimmäinen kerta, kun troijalaisia on käytetty tällaisiin tarkoituksiin Syyriassa.

US military officials are crafting possible new strategies to 'protect the Syrian people' from the Assad regime, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday on Capitol Hill. NATO's Libya intervention may be a model.

The Pentagon is “reviewing and planning for a range of additional measures that may be necessary to protect the Syrian people,” Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday, with top US military planners using the recent US intervention in Libya as a potential template for action.
In testimony before the House Armed Services Committee, Mr. Panetta said the violence in Syria has been “brutal and devastating,” putting the Syrian people “in a desperate” situation.
Iran is helping to prop up Syrian strongmen, Panetta contended, supporting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “with material, financial, and technical assistance.” That’s because “no other country stands to lose more than Iran from the eventual fall of the Assad regime,” he added.
For now, the US is in the process of sending “nonlethal” aid, including communications and medical equipment, to the civilian-led opposition in Syria. The Pentagon is also providing humanitarian relief to the tune of $25 million.
These measures are putting pressure on the Assad regime, Panetta argued. He acknowledged, however, that more may need to be done.
“There are legitimate questions” about what steps are needed to bring an end to the Assad regime, he said, “with some arguing for an approach similar to the one we took in Libya.”
Indeed, he said, the US intervention in Libya is “helping to inform the approach of the United States to Syria."
That must include international consensus, clear regional support from the Arab world, and “a clear legal basis” for any US military action, Panetta said.
Should these be found, the Pentagon will “offer substantial US contributions where we can bring unique resources to bear.”
For the time being, “strong sanctions” are “putting Assad under greater pressure than ever before,” Panetta told lawmakers. Any US actions going forward “must keep all options on the table, while recognizing the limitations of military force."
That said, Assad has to go, Panetta warned. “Make no mistake – one way or another, this regime ultimately will meet its end.”

YK on pyytänyt Suomea osallistumaan Syyrian tulitaukotarkkailun valmisteluosastoon.
Ulkoministeriön mukaan Suomen toivotaan irrottavan kaksi sotilastarkkailijaa Lähi-idän Untso-operaatiosta valmistelemaan Syyria-operaatiota.
Kaksikon Syyriaan siirtymisen ajankohdasta ei ole vielä tietoa.
Suomi on ilmoittanut olevansa valmis osallistumaan turvallisuusneuvoston hyväksymään tarkkailuun. Viime viikolla solmittu tulitaukosopimus on rakoillut, mutta vähentänyt kuitenkin väkivaltaisuuksia.
YK:n Syyriaan lähettämässä etujoukossa on jo entuudestaan mukana suomalainen everstiluutnantti Erkki Pekonen.

Syrian rebels fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad have been accused of using children as fighters in violation of international conventions banning the recruitment of child soldiers, a senior U.N. official said on Monday.

The U.N. concern about the possibility that Syria's opposition may be using child soldiers follows last week's report from the New York-based rights group Human Rights Watch that armed Syrian opposition groups have kidnapped, tortured and executed members of supporters of Assad and members of his security forces.

"We are receiving allegations of children with the Free Syrian Army," Radhika Coomaraswamy, U.N. special representative for children and armed conflict, said in response to a question about Syria's rebels. She gave no details.
